The Starfield Premium Edition is now available and already attracting hundreds of thousands of fans. This notable number is particularly impressive, given that most players will begin their journey a bit later with the release of the Standard version. However, even now many players wonder about FSR 2. Some of them are searching what the best setting is, others think that they should turn it off. In this guide we will tell you all about it.

FSR 2 vs DLSS 2 in Starfield

At this moment, Starfield officially supports only FSR 2 technology. Many owners of Nvidia graphics cards are confused about this, as FSR is developed by AMD, a different company. The truth is that AMD’s product is more versatile than they think.

First of all, both technologies do the same job. Their task is to upscale your game. It means that they take a scene in lower resolution than your native and rework it to look like your target one. If it is done correctly, you will not see a big difference. Of course, they both do it using different algorithms.

Which of these two is better? The question is not so simple because there are various factors to take into consideration. Without diving into details, we may say that DLSS 2 is slightly better than FSR 2 (especially in games with Ray Tracing), but they are generally quite neck and neck.

However, while FSR works on a large variety of graphics cards (Nvidias too), DLSS is available only for RTX 2000 and newer (as it needs Tensor cores). So, it is quite natural that if the studio (in this case Bethesda Game) picks only one technology to support at launch, it is FSR.

FSR 2 in Starfield

Implementation of FSR 2 in Starfield is a different thing. Some players, especially Nvidia graphics cards holders, state that various technical issues occur because of the FSR 2 technology or that it simply doesn’t work.

In the case of Starfield and crashes, many fans report that they have them regardless of FSR turned on or off (and it is not limited to one type of cards). It means that it is not the cause of the problems (at least not the main one). On the other hand, if FSR does not work for you, it is possible that there is a bottleneck somewhere else on a PC. While AMD technology may not be tailored especially for Nvidia’s cards, it should help to gain at least few FPS.

How to adjust FSR 2 in Starfield

Starfield uses quite unique way of implementing FSR technology. It does not support direct presets, in its place it has a slider. It is called Upscaling. The basic rule is that the smaller the number there, the better the game should run (more FPS). The sweet spot is between 60-80%. It should give you the best performance to graphics ratio, but don’t be afraid to make it lower.

If you have Nvidia graphics cards, you are not restricted to FSR though. Modders have already created a tool which will allow you to implement DLSS. Read more about it here. Of course, you may also wait for the official release of this feature, as it is likely that it will happen sooner or later.
