Spider-Man Crushed The Last of Us Part 1 on PC; Sony Reveals Figures
In its latest sales report, Sony shares detailed information on sales of its products. The detailed data is surprising in several respects.
Sony has shared a report presenting selected aspects of the company's operations. The latest document is a great source of information on the condition of the corporation's gaming division.
Uneven results on PC
One of the most interesting pieces of information included in the presentation is the one on the number of copies sold of the two first-party games from the Sony stable on PC.
The comparison clearly shows that, released on PC in 2022, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered proved to be a much bigger sales hit than this year's The Last of Us: Part I.
And while it should be taken into account that Insomniac Games' title has been on the market a few months longer, a more than fourfold difference in the number of copies sold (368,000 versus 1.5 million) may be a gap Naughty Dog's game will never close.
The game's very poor launch and a series of controversies over the meager quality of the PC port clearly affected the sales.
PS Plus subscription
The Japanese also shared data on the PlayStation Plus service. After last year's breakdown of the subscription into three variants that differed in price, a large proportion of users eagerly adopted the more expensive variants of the service.
During the first 10 months of the new price tiers, 6.1 million players reached for the Extra variant of the service. The most expensive Premium package was chosen by 17% of all subscribers (about 8 million). In total, up to 30% of regular subscribers took advantage of the new PS Plus variations..
Hardware
A separate mention was made of the corporation's individual gaming devices. The document notes, for example, that the PS VR2 goggles, released in February, sold only slightly better than the previous model, reaching a ceiling of about 600,000 copies in six weeks..
A more interesting stat, on the other hand, may be the highest ever rate of consoles sold in the first quarter of the year. In 2023, the number of PS4 and PS5 purchased settled around 5 million.
Interestingly, PS5 users spend significantly more money on hardware, games and accessories than PS4 owners (counting the first three years after launch) - $622 compared to $479. Sony also revealed that the PS5 is expected to overtake the PS4 in "all key indicators" by the end of fiscal year 2023. These indicators include games (physical, digital), DLCs, subscriptions (PS Plus), controllers, VR devices, but also exclude the purchase of the console itself.
This information, coupled with a chart suggesting record sales of the PS5 in the last year, could be a clear signal to the market that after a long period of store shortages, customers are looking toward new platforms with increased interest.
