Sony Secures PS5 Exclusives From Other Publishers
According to new reports, Sony is fighting very aggressively for exclusivity. The company is said to have made make such offers to every major publisher.
This week we got a very thrilling announcement that Spider-Man will be a playable character in Marvel's Avengers, but he will only appear on PlayStation 4 and PS5. It turns out that there will be many more such exclusives in the future.
The source of this information is Imran Khan (formerly one of the editors at Game Informer, now co-hosting Kinda Funny). According to him, Sony contacted literally every major publisher with a proposal for an exclusive deal. Many of these companies showed interest by presenting exclusive ideas for additional content, entire games or both.
Sony has received a positive response as it immediately offers good financial conditions. Microsoft is not so much inclined to spend money, so now it is losing the competition on this ground. Of course, it's possible that the latter will change its tactics if the competition's approach starts to bring results.
The devs of Final Fantasy XVI are said to have taken advantage of Sony's offer. According to Khan, the project is already at an advanced stage of development. It was originally planned to be released in June, this year, but a dealy was decided. Currently, all indications are that it's going to be a temporary exclusive for PlayStation 5, so it won't be available on other platforms until some time after its release on PS5. This seems likely, as it was exactly the same with Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Imran Khan also said that Sony will strongly advertize 'PlayStation 5 advantage' and 'Console exclusive' designations in the coming years. The former simply means that the game is the best on PS5, which will probably come down to additional content not found on other platforms such as Spider-Man in Marvel's Avengers.
'Console exclusive' means games unavailable on other consoles. This term opens the way to a PC version. Sony doesn't see PCs as a direct competitor to the PlayStation family, as was the case with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition a few days ago. This approach has the advantage that publishers and developers will probably be much easier to convince to skip only Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch than to release games exclusively on PS5.
