Many editors have taken a liking to the game. They praised the changes in the formula, including the addition of an open world, interesting puzzles and intriguing criminal cases. In addition, the character of the main protagonist himself makes a very good impression. In Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One he is much younger and more cheeky than in previous Frogwares titles, but no less charming.
More criticism is aimed at the combat system, which, according to most reviewers, is an unnecessary addition that distracts from the logic challenges. In addition, many editors feel that the open world could offer more activities.
Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One was also warmly received by the players. On Steam, 75% of user reviews are positive, which is ategorized as a "mostly positive" reception.
