Tactical Shooter and Horror Game in One Becomes Increasingly Popular
SCP: 5K waited more than a year for its success. A major update, positive ratings and advertising on YouTube helped spark interest in the title.
Some games appearing on the market reach the peak of popularity right after their release, while others have to wait a bit for their five minutes of glory. The latter situation was experienced by SCP: 5K, which was available in alpha version as early as February 2022. However, the number of active players in the work of the independent studio Affray Interactive began to grow only now.
The slow road to the top
SCP: 5K is a co-op horror shooter set in the well-known sci-fi universe of SCP: Foundation. The game was created thanks to a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, organized in 2021 (when the project was still known as SCP: Pandemic). The fundraiser was a great success.
Since then SCP: 5K has come out in early access, but that debut didn't resonate - until this June. SCP: 5K began to gain popularity, and as a result, in the last 30 days, the average number of players increased by more than 276% (via Steamcharts).
Number of interested players continues to grow, and the title's ratings on Steam remain overwhelmingly positive - currently at around 79%.
Merits of SCP: 5K and possible reasons for its sudden success
The unexpected surge in popularity experienced by SCP: 5K was undoubtedly contributed to by the appearance of gameplay videos on YouTube. For example, OperatorDrewski, a content creator with more than 1.7 million subscribers, posted a video from SCP: 5K 9 days ago. It has already been viewed more than one million times.
In addition, the game received a major update, which seems to coincide almost perfectly with the increase in player interest. It contained, among other things, new enemies, locations, weapons and significantly improved the game's optimization.
In the comments on Steam, reviewers unanimously recognize SCP: 5K as an unpolished diamond, which in time has the potential to become a truly outstanding title. However, they are already drawing attention to interesting adaptation of the source material, intriguing locations and an attempt to break out of the stiff framework of the online pvp genre, giving a breath of fresh air to an inconspicuous game.
SCP: 5K is currently available on Steam at a discount. The game's regular price is $18.
