Roblox Won't Lose the Iconic „Oof” Yet
Fans of Roblox can breathe a sigh of relief. The long-announced removal of the well-known (and highly memetic) death sound has been delayed until next year. The sound will remain in the game in a new form - a paid bonus.
The future of the famous sound
In 2019, one of Roblox's hallmarks - the iconic "oof" death sound - became the subject of a copyright dispute between the developers and the original creator, Tommy Tallarico. A preliminary decision was made to completely remove the sound from the game, but a few days ago an agreement was made to keep the sound in the game until the end of the year.
The famous "oof" will be replaced by a completely new sound next month, with the arrival of Developers Marketplace. Fortunately, it will not disappear from the game completely. Tallarico will introduce the sound to the marketplace, included in his set of sound effects for developers. The recognizable "oof" will be available for purchase separately for 100 Robux, which is about $1, while the whole set will cost from 10 to 250 dollars depending on the number of sound effects purchased.
The origins of "oof"
Where did the sound used in hundreds of memes really come from, and why are copyright claims surfacing only now?
Originally, the sound was included in the final scene of the shooter Messiah, created in 2000 by Shiny Entertainment, where Tommy Tallarico worked. Then, in 2007, the soundtrack was included in Roblox, but it wasn't until two years later that it was published in the game's official sound library. However, it took more than ten years before the creator of "oof" discovered (thanks to VentureBeat, which was the first to determine the origin of the work) that his work was used as a death sound of characters in the game and quickly took legal steps to recover his digital output.
If you want to hear the famous "oof" and you haven't had a chance to play Roblox before, the game is available for free via the official website on PC, Android and iOS mobile devices and on Xbox One.
