Rise of the Ronin's PC launch last week has been plagued by performance issues. But another problem has appeared, some players are losing their saved progress.

This morning, Team Ninja, the development team behind Rise of the Ronin, which recently launched on Steam, shared that they are investigating save data issues. The steam launch of this previous PlayStation exclusive comes nearly a year after its original release. Though, the game has not found the same level of success on this secondary platform. Steam reviews currently sit at Mixed with 50% positive reviews. Players and critics alike have been vocal about performance issues.

Rise of the Ronin save data issues are being investigated by Team Ninja

If you have noticed save issues with your Steam playthrough of Rise of the Ronin, you are not alone. Players have been making their issues known via the Steam community page. Thanks to VideoGamesChronicle for originally noticing these messages. A few players report losing a few hours of progress, while one unfortunate player has apparently lost between ten and fifteen hours of gameplay. Personally, I don’t blame someone for never returning to the game again after that.

Some Steam users have thankfully been supportive, offering potential solutions to the problems and trying to help their fellow gamer find a solution, but it appears that nothing has been successful so far, at least with these instances. A few other commenters have shared that they encountered similar issues. It’s hard to tell exactly how widespread this issue could be, but at the moment, it might be relatively uncommon. But either way, it was enough for Team Ninja, the division of Koei Tecmo that worked on Rise of the Ronin to respond via social media.

The post reads: “We are currently investigating the reported save data issues for #RiseoftheRonin Steam edition…” and links a Steam community post with further details and possible solutions. Team Ninja added “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing.” Unfortunately, the comment thread for this post appears to be mostly filled with upset fans spamming something along the lines of “Fix performance” referring to the suboptimal performance issues that have been plaguing this PC launch.

While Rise of the Ronin may not be having the smoothest PC launch, the player count has been consistent, according to SteamDB. The day of the Steam launch, the player count reached just over twelve thousand, with a new peak breaking that number yesterday. For now, we will have to wait to see if the player numbers dwindle, or if perhaps a significant patch is able to bring more players back to this game.
