Remnant 2 - Ultrawide Explained; Is Widescreen Well Implemented?
If you are a proud owner of ultrawide screen and wondering if Remnant 2 supports it, you're in the right spot. We have checked if widescreen is well implemented in this title.
One would argue that ultra-widescreen monitors are revolution and offer completely new experience for players. While undeniably providing more real estate on desktop, not all games are well prepared to accommodate additional space. Some of them even restrict the view as it may be considered an unfair advantage in specific genres like RTSes or MOBAs, giving people using ultrawides more information. With freshly released Remnant 2, players geared up with those monitors might wonder how the game performs in this mode. We’re here to help and answer your questions.
Ultra-widescreen vs widescreen
As a quick reminder, many people refer to ultra-widescreen simply as a widescreen. The difference is significant, as “normal” widescreen resolutions are currently most common. They include aspect ratios 16:9 (1920x1080, 2560x1400, etc.) and 16:10 (1920x1200, 2560x1600, and so on).
Ultra-widescreen, on the other hand, refers to screens with aspect ratio wider than 2:1, where most popular is 21:9 (2560x1080, 3440x1440, and others). As already mentioned, not all games support ultrawides which leads them to be “pillarboxed”. This simply means that there are huge black bars on the sides of the screen, completely defeating the purpose of ultrawide.
Even if a game doesn’t natively support 21:9 or higher aspect ratio, that doesn't stop more resilient fans from giving up on this feature. There are many solutions and mods created for those titles to enable ultrawide, so don’t be discouraged if a game you want to play doesn’t officially support your monitor’s resolution. Keep digging!
Ultra-widescreen support in Remnant 2
With a higher budget than the previous game in the series and engine upgrade from Unreal Engine 4 to 5, Remant 2 natively supports ultra-widescreen resolutions. That does not come without some caveats though. You have to be prepared that cutscenes will be either letterboxed or windowboxed. This will result in the cinematics having black bars at least at the sides of the screen. The title is definitely prepared in the first place to adapt a lot more common widescreen standard (16:9) better.
Since the game is not yet fully optimised and can have performance dips even on higher end GPUs, keep in mind that running the game in ultrawide res can deepen this problem. If you don’t have powerful enough graphics card, you may need to lower video settings to maintain high framerate.
Some players have reported that Remnant 2 can be stretched out on the sides of the screen creating a fisheye-like effect. This can be related to FOV settings. If you experience such problem, go into settings and try to play around with the FOV slider to mitigate the effect. Another solution that you can try is “Flawless Widescreen” application, however Remnant 2 is not yet officially supported. It won’t hurt keeping an eye on it though.
The last point worth noting is that the title does not support moving HUD elements closer to the center of the screen. It may be irrelevant for some people but can be a disadvantage to others.
