Rumor: Quake Will Return With a Female Protagonist?
Quake may be another FPS series, which after years will live to see a full-fledged installment. If new rumor is to be believed, it will be single- and multiplayer game with a female in the main role.
It was reported the other day that the devs of Doom were initially considering adding a female as a playable character in the new installments of the series. Nothing came of it (yet), but apparently id Software is thinking about a similar move for another iconic shooter series. During a recent episode of The Xbox Era Podcast insider Nick "Shpeshal Nick" Baker mentioned a report that the studio was working on the return of Quake together with Machine Games, the team behind the recent games from the Wolfenstein series.
Nick allegedly received the information (via Idle Sloth) through a message on Discord, although he did not state how reliable the source was. The title is to be developed with both single player and multiplayer modes in mind. The main character of the new Quake is going to be a female.
This treatment would not be as shocking as in the case of Doom, the story layer of Quake was very modest up until the fourth installment, even compared to a typical FPS from the 90s (at least until the release of the first Unreal), in which the story was rarely more than an excuse to eliminate tons of enemies. Neither the "Ranger" from the pseudo-medieval first installment, nor Bitterman and Matthew Kane from subsequent installments, ever gained the iconic status of Doom Slayer or B.J. Blazkowicz.
Of course, these are nothing more than unconfirmed rumors and it's better not to take them too seriously. As we all know, even reliable insiders sometimes slip up, as evidenced by Nick Baker, whose information happened to be, admittedly rarely, wrong. Anyway he doesn't give it as a confirmed information, so it's better to approach it with caution. At least until this year's edition of QuakeCon (taking place on August 19-21), which may finally bring some good news for fans of the series after the - let's be honest - mediocre success of Quake Champions.
