Groundbreaking FPS Quake 2 Will Get a Remaster [Update]
Credible rumors have surfaced online, according to which a refreshed version of Quake 2 will be announced in a week.
Update
Leaker billbil-kun has new info about the refreshed version of Quake 2. The game is scheduled to debut today, August 10, at 7 p.m. CET and cost around $10. The game will get an official presentation during QuakeCon event, beginning today.
Original news (August 4)
Reliable rumors have surfaced, according to which a refreshed version of the classic FPS by id Software is being prepared.
- According to these reports, work is underway on an improved edition of Quake II.
- The project is expected to be announced during the QuakeCon, which will be held on August 10-11 this year.
- The refreshed version of Quake 2 is expected to head to PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5.
- The game will also be available as part of Game Pass at the same time.
Developing a refreshed version of this game makes sense. Released two years ago, remaster of the first Quake turned out to be quite a success, so it's no surprise that a similar facelift could befall the second part of the series. The first rumors about a new edition of the sequel appeared as early as last year, so something definitely seems to be afoot.
- The refreshed edition of the first part installment offered support for ultrawidescreen resolutions, improved models, dynamic lighting, anti-aliasing, as well as an all-new additional campaign.
- It is expected that the new edition of Quake 2 will receive similar improvements
Recall that Quake II was released in 1997 on PC. Two years later, ports were released for PlayStation and Nintendo 64 consoles. The game was also ported to the Xbox 360, where it was a bonus included with Quake 4.
It is worth mentioning that if these rumors are confirmed, this will not be the first refreshed version of Quake 2, which has been released in recent years. In 2019, we got Quake 2 RTX, a special edition of the game offering ray tracing support, as well as better textures. We are curious to see if the improvements from this release will be implemented in the latest remaster.
