PS5 Exceeded PlayStation 4 Sales in Japan

The PlayStation 5 needed only nine months to cross the threshold of one million units sold in Japan. Thus, the console is faring better than the PS4.

Sony has reasons to be happy. According to the estimates of the Famitsu magazine, more than one million units of PlayStation 5 have already been sold in Japan. This result was achieved in less than ten months since the console's launch in the Land of the Rising Sun.

This means that the PS5 is selling faster in Japan than the PlayStation 4. The older of these consoles needed eleven months to cross the threshold of one million units sold. However, it is worth noting that the PlayStation 3 achieved such a result in just eight months.

As for the specific numbers, in the period from November 12, 2020, the day of PlayStation 5's launch in Japan, to September 5, the console found 1,012,656 buyers in this country. Of these, 847,421 chose the standard edition, and only 165,235 the driveless Digital Edition.

The domination of the more expensive model can be seen even more strongly in last week's sales results, with Japanese residents buying 15,580 units of the standard PS5 and only 1,495 copies of the Digital Edition.

Famitsu also reported that the best-selling boxed game for PlayStation 5 in the country is Resident Evil Village, which has sold 67,000 copies to date.

Analysts point out that the PS5 had the potential to achieve even better sales results, but this was hindered by serious problems with the console's availability after launch. It is expected that PlayStation 5 will do better and better in Japan, especially since there are several games on the horizon, anticipated by many gamers from this country, including primarily Final Fantasy XVI.
