Astro Bot ‘almost outdid Nintendo at its own game’, Reggie Fils-Aimé admitted at New York Game Awards 2025
Astro Bot’s moment in the spotlight isn’t over yet. Team Asobi picked up another major prize at the New York Game Awards 2025, and even former Nintendo boss gave them a shout-out.
Astro Bot crushed the competition at yet another game awards! This time, Team Asobi’s PS5 platformer took home the top prize at the 2025 New York Game Awards. It even snagged four nominations at the event, hosted by the Reggie Fils-Aimé, former Nintendo of America president and COO.
Astro Bot with another victory
At the New York Game Awards on January 21st, 2025, Astro Bot won not just Best Game of the Year but also took home awards for Best Music in a Game and Best Kids Game. Reggie Fils-Aimé commented:
So I have to admit it, Astro Bot almost outdid Nintendo at its own game.
And yeah, I couldn’t agree more. As my college noted in his review, Astro Bot is honestly an amazing game, full of heart and packed with little details, making it feel like a love letter to PlayStation’s history and gaming as a whole. Plus, the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller really takes things up a notch, making you feel like you’re actually in the game. Mario platformers have long been seen as unbeatable in their genre, with little real competition.
We can’t forget that it was director Nicolas Doucet from Team Asobi who first mentioned Nintendo and Mario games in their acceptance speech at the Game of the Year Awards in December 2024. That was a classy move, and they’ve earned my full respect.
I don’t think anyone saw this little guy winning GOTY 2024, and that’s what I love about this industry – it can still surprise us. While everyone else is focused on making huge, expensive titles and online games are dropping like flies, Astro Bot stole the spotlight. It really shows that we still want just great games, without unnecessary fillers, yet packed with content. We definitely need more single player experiences this polished and inventive.
