Project L Takes Shape - Here's LoL Fighting Game in Action

Riot Games showed the first gameplay from Project L, a fighting game featuring League of Legends characters. However, the game is still far from release.

Two years ago, celebrating League of Legends' 10th birthday, Riot Games announced a fighting game set in the universe of the popular MOBA game - the mysterious Project L (it's a codename, which will probably be changed before release). Since then, apart from the mention that it's development is at a very early stage of work, we have not received any new information about the project. This changed last week during the Undercity Nights event, when the below video was presented.

When publishing the material, the creators also sent a message to the fans - after a long analysis, the developers finally know what Project L is to become. This fighting game will offer tag battles (similar to those offered by Dragon Ball FighterZ, Tekken Tag Tournament, Marvel vs. Capcom, etc.).During which we will control a team consisting of two fighters. The title is to be characterized by a low threshold of entry, while remaining difficult to get good at (easy to play, hard to master). The above video introduces the character Ekko.

The footage looks quite promising, but don't let its solid execution fool you - the creators admitted that this is a vertical slice, a video showing the target quality, but not reflecting the project's current condition. The developers still have a lot of work ahead of them - the list of fighters is still incomplete, many stages need to be designed, there is no interface and menus or ranking system. Project L should not be expected earlier than 2023.

Riot Games is supposed to focus on quality in this project. Developers believe that their game will attract players for years, so they do not intend to rush. The priority of the creators seems to be writing the best possible network code of the game. The starting point is to be GGPO technology (commonly known as "rollback"), to which the developers intend to add their own RiotDirect solution, uses to minimize ping in LoL or Valorant.

Fortunately, we won't be waiting for another two years without any news about Project L. Riot Games promises to provide at least two updates on the work progress next year. Another portion of information should be released at the beginning of the second half of 2022.
