Over a Billion PlayStation 4 Games Have Been Sold
Sony announced that by the end of January 2020, total sales of PlayStation 4 games exceeded 1.18 billion copies. The only console in this family the has done better is PS2.
Sony has reasons to be satisfied. The Japanese giant has just boasted that more than a billion games for PlayStation 4 have already been sold. This was already done last year, with 1.18 billion copies at 31 January 2020.
This impressive result includes both boxed and digital releases purchased by PlayStation Store. Only full versions of games are counted, not expansions. Between January 8 2019 and January 8 2020 alone, 274 million copies of games were sold on PlayStation 4.
Thus PS4 managed to outperform PS3 (999.4 million games sold) and the first PlayStation (962 million). The leader is still PS2, whose owners have purchased 1.53 billion copies of games. We're wondering if this record can be broken. This may be made difficult by the release of PlayStation 5 this year, but the rich library of PS4 is likely to be of interest for a long time to come.
Let's recall that PlayStation 4 made its debut in November 2013. By the end of last year, 106 million units of the console had been sold. The leader in this category is also PS2 with 155 million.
