Onimusha: Way of the Sword's New Trailer Shifts the Tone of the Game
During today's State of Play, a new trailer for Onimush: Way of the Sword showcased more gameplay and an interesting tone shift to a more lighthearted story.

After the surprise revitalization announced at last year’s Game Awards, Onimusha: Way of the Sword has quickly become a highly anticipated game. Last week’s Capcom Spotlight show didn’t reveal much we hadn’t already seen, but during today’s PlayStation State of Play we got a glimpse at more gameplay and the more humorous side of the game.
New trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword showcases humor and using the environment in combat
Onimusha: Way of the Sword resurrects a series that has not had a new original game since 2006, and since Way of the Sword is planned to be released in 2026, that will make it a twenty year wait. Unless you count the VR game or the browser game from 2012. But either way, this is the most serious return to this series in a long, long time.
The new trailer featured in today’s PlayStation State of Play showcased the protagonist utilizing the environment in combat. Lifting a wooden board to protect from projectiles and parrying enemies into objects. One enemy was led into a brazier which set them on fire, while another was knocked into a kimono hanging to dry, resulting in the clothing covering the enemy’s face for a time. This added level of creativity to combat could be a great way to keep the action engaging.
Overall, the trailer had a very dark and ominous tone, but that was undercut by a few humorous moments from the protagonist. After a long monologue about how using a sword is all about strength and bringing as many friends to the fight as you want, the protagonist realizes there are far too many adversaries and makes a run for it.
The last few clips of the trailer show what looks like a challenging boss, a creature swinging a weapon with little care for its allies. Finally, at the end, the protagonist is shown speaking to a voice in the gauntlet but is apparently confused about what the voice is. Overall, this trailer has shifted what was previously a gray, ominous, tense action game into something with more humor and lightheartedness to it. It will be interesting to see how this is received by fans and how the game ultimately turns out when it releases in 2026.
