Cities: Skylines 2 Devs Express Regret Over Lack of Official Mods at Release
Colossal Order studio continues to work on adding official mod support to Cities: Skylines 2. For several months, the developers have been working with modders who are testing different versions of the highly anticipated feature.
Usually, every week the developers of Cities: Skylines II publish further information about the game as part of a series of entries called "Word of the Week." Players eagerly anticipating official mod support probably won't be satisfied with the latest news about Colossal Order's game that we received today.
- According to the Paradox forum, there's still a lot of work to be done on the official modding tool, and the devs need more time to perfect the entire project. We probably don't need to mention that this doesn't forecast the quick release of the anticipated editor.
- From the "Word of the Week," we also learned that several versions of this tool have been made available to selected moderators and content creators to express their opinions. Such cooperation has been going on for several months.
- Mod support will consist of at least three components: Paradox Mods, Code Modding, and map editing. We will learn more details about these features at a later date.
Paradox's modding tool will be released in open beta. This will allow to fix any errors.
We have dedicated devs working on the modding support, eager to tackle bugs and implement improvements, so we'll keep patching the tools throughout the public Beta phase [...]. Naturally, the work will continue even past that as we receive more feedback and suggestions from you -- we read in the latest Paradox post.
Let's emphasize that the lack of an official modding tool in Cities: Skylines II isn't just a problem for fans. The developers also deeply regret not being able to deliver this support on the day of the release. They were supposed to be hindered by "technical problems" and not having enough time to complete the feature. If the developers truly aimed to offer mod support at launch, the release would likely be delayed by several months or even years, given the significant extension of the work on it.
We can play Cities: Skylines II from October 2023. The title is expected to be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in spring 2024.
