Mobile Monster Incoming; Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3080 Ti May Need a Lot of Power

Nvidia is expected to announce mobile versions of the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPUs in January. It looks like laptops with these cards installmed will need a lot of power.

VideoCardz.com has reached unofficial information that the laptop versions of Nvidia's GPUs, namely GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, due to be announced in January 2022 will consume a lot of power - or at least noticeably more than their non-Ti counterparts. It appears that the maximum TGP will be 10 and 5 watts higher, which translates to 175 watts for GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and 150 watts for GeForce RTX 3070 Ti.

The first, more powerful card promises to be particularly interesting. The power-hungry mobile monster is to be equipped with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM (it's a pity that these will not be GDDR6X) at 16 Gbps and have 7424 CUDA cores. So the high power consumption seems justified - however, it is worth remembering that other manufacturers can further increase the maximum TGP thanks to Nvidia Dynamic Boost 2.0 technology, which allows for transferring part of the power between the CPU and GPU, thus enabling us to configure the energy consumed by the GPU.

If the rumors are confirmed and the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will use the new, possibly more energy-efficient GA103 chip, then combined with sufficiently efficient cooling, the average TGP could be as high as 180-190 watts. We're likely to get more details - on both the 3080 Ti and 3070 Ti - at CES 2022, which takes place January 5-8.
