New Tactical RPG from Developer of Warcraft 3 and StarCraft 2 Revealed. Sunderfolk Gameplay Brings Interesting Breath of Fresh Air
Blizzard veterans have officially announced the tactical RPG Sunderfolk. The title will appeal especially to board game fans who like to play evening sessions with friends.
It's been more than four years since Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime announced the formation of Dreamhaven. During this time, we didn't know what the industry veterans were working on, however, a month ago they announced that we would get to know the first details in October. That moment has finally arrived and one of Dreamhaven’s two internal studios, Secret Door, has revealed its first game titled Sunderfolk.
Sunderfolk - a new game from Blizzard veterans
The upcoming title will be a cooperative tactical RPG in which we, together with up to 4 friends, will set off on various adventures to protect the village of Arden, which is also our base of operations. Players will have a choice of six unique character classes - Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Hunter, and Rogue - and the combat will take place in turns using decks of cards on boards divided into hexes.
The distinguishing feature of Sunderfolk are undoubtedly its controls. Although you need a PC or console to play, you won't use a gamepad or keyboard during the game, but a smartphone or tablet. With their help, we will perform actions in combat, manage the character, or interact with the world and its inhabitants.
You must gather your party before venturing forth.
The creators openly talk about their inspiration from board games and tabletop RPGs such as D&D. Their goal is to recreate the impressions that accompany players during joint sessions among friends. Secret Door's boss, Chris Sigaty – producer of Warcraft III and StarCraft 2, among other titles – said that his new team also includes a group of board game fanatics who have been conducting such sessions for many years.
As creators, we also like to look at what inspires us and think about how to make these kinds of experiences easier to live through, so that more people can enjoy them, just like we do. We’re excited that with Sunderfolk we can offer players a game that’s easy to learn, yet challenging to master, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.
Though Sunderfolk is designed for playing with friends live, there's nothing stopping you from connecting with them online. It's also worth adding that you will be able to play solo as well, and in that case, many characters will be under your control at the same time.
Sunderfolk is coming to PC, PS5, XSX/S and Nintendo Switch. The game is scheduled for release in 2025. The devs also plan to conduct closed beta tests, which you can sign up for now. Additionally, you will find the minimum system requirements on the game's card on Steam.
