- Legendary already has some ideas for more MonsterVerse movies;
- The success of Godzilla vs. Kong took the studio by surprise;
- A new licensing agreement with Toho is needed to make more Godzilla movies.
Godzilla vs. Kong is doing so well that it's looking increasingly likely that a sequel will be created. Josh Grode, the CEO of Legendary, the studio responsible for Godzilla vs. Kong, stated in an interview that the company has many ideas for the next installments of MonsterVerse.
This is an important declaration, because until recently the future of the franchise was uncertain. Godzilla: King of the Monsters turned out to be a box-office disappointment, grossing $386 million during 30 weeks of presence in theaters, which was much worse than the box-office result achieved by the previous installments, namely Godzilla ($524 million) and Kong: Skull Island ($566 million).
The success of Godzilla vs. Kong changed things. In the three weeks after its release, the film has already earned $357 million. That's an absolute pandemic record. This result is all the more impressive because the production is also available at no extra charge to HBO Max subscribers. Josh Grode admitted in an interview that the label is surprised by how well the title is doing.
It is worth mentioning that the movie is also a streaming hit. Godzilla vs. Kong scored the best viewing figures in HBO Max's history, enjoying more popularity than Zack Snyder's Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984.
The obstacle Legendary has to overcome is that its contract with Japanese company Toho to use Godzilla in American films has already expired. However, the success of the latest installment of MonsterVerse gives hope that another deal will be signed, and Grode's statement shows that the studio wants to develop the franchise. We, on our part, hope that both entities will continue their cooperation.
