Memory Prices Will Increase, DDR3 With 50% Hike in 2021

Everything seems to indicate that this year we will see a large increase in the prices of DDR3 memory. This is due to declining production linked with, among other things, preparations for the release of the modern DDR5 standard.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. DDR3 memory prices are growing - before the end of the year this type of memory may cost even 50 times more;
  2. The reason is a decreasing production combined with a sustained, fairly high demand.

If you are planning to buy DDR3 in the nearest future, we have bad news for you. Everything indicates that in 2021 the prices of this type of memory will increase noticeably (via TechPowerUp). We are already seeing increases of 20-30%, but before the end of the year they may even reach 40-50%. The reason is similar to other components - the demand is much greater than the supply.

DDR3 is an outdated technology - you won't find this type of memory in most gaming computers (modern PCs use the newer DDR4 standard), but it is still used in older PCs, servers, and IoT (Internet of Things) devices.

It is worth noting that even newer DDR5 modules will soon be introduced to the market, to be supported by platforms using Intel's Alder Lake-S processors planned for the second half of 2021. This is one of the reasons for reduced DDR3 production, resulting in higher prices - some large manufacturers such as Samsung or SK Hynix are starting to produce next-gen components (for example, the first company has reduced the number of DDR3 chips produced by 2/3).
