New Minecraft Snapshot May Remove Bedrock Blocks, Players Complain

Snapshot 21w44a for Minecraft: Java Edition brings with it many changes in terrain generation. However, some players are complaining about falling off the map when digging, caused by lack of the bedrock layer...

A few days ago a new snapshot from update 1.18 was released for Minecraft: Java Edition. It seems that the snapshot in question, numbered 21w44a, brings a rather unprecedented problem. As it turns out, some players are complaining about bedrock blocks, or more specifically... them not being there.

So it seems that bedrock is not generated in chunks that have already been generated. The problem should only affect worlds converted to 21w44a from previous versions of Minecraft (complaining users converted from version 1.17.1) and probably does not appear in those created in the snapshot in question. YouTube user Phoenix SC reproduced the bug in his recent video:

The cause of this bug is most likely due to changes made to the world generation in 21w44a. The snapshot changes the height at which deepslate mixes with stone. This occurs from Y=0 to Y=8, not Y=-8 to Y=0 as before. Additionally, the new chunk content is now generated during world upgrades. In the previous release, the space was only filled with deepslate blocks.

In addition to these new features, 21w44a introduces a new "Online" tab in the game settings. It enables us to adjust the difficulty level when we are connected to the server, it also let us configure Realms notifications or hide our nickname in the player list when checking server status. Furthermore, sleeping in bed will now reset the weather cycle, but only if it rained. The devs also fixed incorrect torch generation in mines, collisions with creatures and powder snow.

The whole thing is part of preparations before the anticipated Minecraft: Java Edition update to version 1.18 - Caves & Cliffs: Part II, which is expected to bring much more "realistic" terrain generation. Snapshot 21w44a is the eighth snapshot of the aforementioned version. Let's hope that the developers will deal with the "disappearing" bedrock before its release. Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions are now available on Xbox Game Pass.
