Microsft Follows Sony and Bets on Single Player Games
Microsoft's Phil Spencer said that the company would in the future put more emphasis on single-player games. This will be possible thanks to recent acquisitions of many teams specializing in this field.
Answering a fan's question, Phil Spencer from Microsoft ensured that single-player games would be an important element in the further development of Xbox. A number of new teams, which recently joined the Xbox Game Studios group, will help in this task.
Spencer's statement reminds us of what Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said a few months ago. He declared that the company would "never stop" creating large games with engaging stories.
In this generation of consoles, Microsoft has put a strong emphasis on multiplayer and multiplatform games, and this was one of the reasons why PlayStation 4, with its rich collection of attractive exclusive titles, was so far ahead of Xbox One.
Phil Spencer's declarations will most likely be covered in reality, because in the last several months Microsoft has purchased a number of teams specializing in games with extensive story campaigns. Last year, the company took over Ninja Theory (such titles as Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and DMC: Devil May Cry), Compulsion Games (Contrast and We Happy Few), inXile Entertainment (Wasteland 2, The Bard's Tale IV and Torment: Tides of Numenera) and Obsidian Entertainment (Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords and Pillars of Eternity) teams. In turn, this year the corporation bought Double Fine Productions, known from Broken Age and Psychonauts series.
All these purchases mean that Microsoft should do much better in the next generation of exclusive single-player games.
