Metro Exodus 60 FPS Patch and Improved Ray Tracing on Xbox Series X/S Now Available
Deep Silver has rushed its Metro Exodus upgrade for Xbox Series X/S consoles a bit. As a result, the next-gen update to the game (including improved ray tracing) is now available for download on Microsoft's platforms.
Tomorrow, Metro Exodus will receive its much-anticipated update on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. At least that's what was announced, but apparently the people responsible for releasing the update slipped a finger. As a result, the next-gen edition of the latest Metro is now available to download on Microsoft platforms. Deep Silver has vaguely confirmed on Twitter that this was unintentional, but was also looking into whether the same could be done for the PS5 version. Apparently, the answer was a resounding no, and we won't be getting the PlayStation 5 upgrade until June 18 at 2am PT. That's also when the DLCs will be unlocked on both ninth-gen platforms.
The patch weighs in at a hefty 67GB on XSX/S, which is a definite no-no for gamers constantly struggling with the relatively small disk space on ninth-gen consoles. That doesn't mean, however, that Metro Exodus takes that much extra on the new Xboxes - once downloaded, some of the installed game files will be replaced by newer versions. According to the PlayStation Game Size account on Twitter Metro Exodus on PS5 requires over 73GB of storage space without the update. Either way, you better be prepared for a longer download session.
If you want to check out how Metro Exodus looks like after the update, Digital Foundry has already published some footage (and article) comparing the standard edition of the game with the Enhanced Edition. Conclusions do not differ too much from the delight expressed by players who have already had the opportunity to check the enhanced version of the title. The game's 60 FPS boost alone is a welcome change, plus the excellent use of ray tracing, new textures, etc. It's not without occasional performance drops, but fortunately they are quite modest and happen very rarely. Perhaps this will be corrected in the next update.
