This Hollywood Actor Could've Played Joel in The Last of Us TV
When the showrunners were looking for a replacement for the role of Jeol for the TV adaptation of The Last of Us, Pedro Pascal was temporarily unavailable. So the series' creators discussed the engagement with the agent of a certain famous Oscar winner.
HBO's The Last of Us achieved incredible success and met with a positive reception from critics and viewers. The production gained immense popularity, and with it, the names associated with the project were put on everyone's lips. Particular recognition and appreciation was gained by Pedro Pascal for his portrayal of Joel Miller.
The actor did his job very well, and many cannot imagine that the protagonist could have been portrayed by anyone else. And although the show's creators admitted that Pascal was a favorite for the lead role from the very beginning, during initial talks they were told that the star was not available. At the time filmmakers therefore considered another well-known actor - Matthew McConaughey.
It turned out that the Oscar winner, known for such productions as Dallays Buyers Club, Interstellar or the show True Detective, would have time to take on the adaptation of the popular video game. As Craig Mazin confessed during the Happy Sad Confused podcast, while Pascal remained unavailable, they were contacted by the American's agent.
"I can't say it was a series [of calls]. It was more something like: 'Hey, we have something to discuss.' Pedro was on our list from the very beginning. We were told he wasn't available, and then, when we were a little hesitant, I got a call from his [McConaughey's] agent, who said: 'You know, he might be available.'"
The filmmaker later added:
"Matthew McConaughey is an amazing actor. I'm sure he would be great, but he would be different, and I like what we did, so what can I say, I think it worked out."
McConaughey is an award-winning actor and he would certainly have handled the role. In the end, however, Pedro Pascal played a character that has become a viewer favorite. His creation in The Last of Us can be watched on HBO Max.
