Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Will Offer a Fresh Take on Familiar Characters

In a recent post on the official PlayStation blog, Jean-Francois Dugas, senior creative director at Eidos Montreal, talked a bit about the designs and characters of the upcoming Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The game will debut in October this year.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Jean-Francois Dugas from Eidos Montreal revealed what inspired his team when creating character designs for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy;
  2. Their appearance will refer to previous games in which the characters appeared, and emphasize their history and character.

Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of space adventurers who travel across the universe, have been featured in a variety of media. They were born on the pages of Marvel comics, then appeared, among others, in films belonging to the MCU or, not so long ago, in an adventure game by Telltale. Currently, the most recognizable members of this team (whose composition has changed over the years) are Peter Quill (also known as Star-Lord), Drax, Gamora, Rocket and Groot. It is these five that we will see in the upcoming Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy from Eidos Montreal. But how will they be portrayed? After all, in various renditions the images and even characters of these heroes could differ. This topic was recently commented on by Jean-Francois Dugas, the game's senior creative director.

As we read in a recent post on the official PlayStation blog, when preparing the biographical sketch and general design of the characters for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Dugas and co. have tried to draw inspiration from all sorts of sources. So what we'll see in the game will be a "fresh and faithful" combination of several visions.

This is how Star-Lord will look like in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Let's start with Peter Quill, the son of human female Meredith Quill and J'Son, king of the planet Spartax. Dugas emphasized that his appearance, stylized after a space pirate, will reflect his fascination with the rock band Star-Lord (we'll see the band's emblem on his jacket) and his years spent on Earth (80s hairstyle, video game badges, etc.).

Then we have Drax, a warrior born on the planet Katath, who has his family killed by the mad titan Thanos. His appearance in the upcoming Eidos Montreal game is meant to reflect his past. There will be plenty of scars on his body - souvenirs from the clashes he took part in and lived to tell the tale. The idea is that they are proof of the character's extraordinary resilience.

Now let's move on to Gamora, representative of the race of Zen-Whoberi and the foster daughter of Thanos, although they eventually had a falling-out and went their separate ways. According to Dugas, she's the deadliest woman in the galaxy, and her in-game clothing is meant to emphasize that. Her armor, whose colors and details are supposed to add to the character's predatory nature, was inspired by the comics.

Finally, we have Rocket, a genetically modified raccoon, and Groot, a living tree-like representative of the Flora Colossi species. They are an inseparable pair and their design in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is meant to reflect that. For example, Groot will wear a harness created by Rocket that enables the raccoon to climb and shoot enemies, while Rocket weaves a mini-Groot-shaped bead into his goatee.

Action of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will be set in a universe where 12 years earlier there was a huge galactic war initiated by a race called the Chitauri. It caused great destruction and affected everyone, including our Guardians. How will their fate turn out eventually? We'll find out on October 26. The title is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.
