Lollipop Chainsaw Remake Announced [UPDATED]
Lollipop Chainsaw Remake has been announced, a revamped version of the twisted 2012 action game, involving Suda51 and James Gunn.
Update
Designer Suda51 and director and writer James Gunn have announced that they have nothing to do with the remake of the game. This does not mean that they are against the idea - they are just not involved in it.
There has also been a small controversy related to the game's producer. In the announcement of Lollipop Chainsaw Remake Yoshimi Yasuda may have slightly exaggerated his own role in the development of the original, as he implied that Suda51 had an advisory role, while the payroll shows him as the project's creative director.
Original news
A remake of Lollipop Chainsaw, a cult Japanese action game from 2012, is in the pipeline.
- Information on the project is very limited.
- The game will be titled simply Lollipop Chainsaw Remake.
- It is expected to be released next year.
- No target platforms have been provided for the time being.
Dragami Games is responsible for the project. The original was developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, but the remake is in good hands, as many veterans of the original are working on it, including producer Yoshimi Yasuda.
The developers promise that Lollipop Chainsaw Remake will offer significantly improved visuals, taking advantage of the capabilities of modern consoles. The soundtrack will be changed - for legal reasons it was not possible to license all the songs from the original, so the missing tracks will be replaced with new ones.
Lollipop Chainsaw has developed a cult following
Recall that Lollipop Chainsaw debuted in June 2012 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game collected average reviews (the PS3 release has an average rating of 67%), but over the years it has amassed quite a large and devoted fan base, for whom it is a cult game.
One of the reasons why the game gained so many supporters turned out to be unusual, which was due to its creators. Indeed, the game involved Suda51 (known, among others, for the No More Heroes series), and the script was co-written by James Gunn, i.e. the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and the The Suicide Squad movie.
The original never lived to see a PC port, something that many gamers once lamented (some even considered buying a console just for this title), and we hope the remake will fix this problem. Especially since a slew of games with Suda51's involvement have been released on PCs in recent years - just to name a few we have No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, The 25th Ward: The Silver Case, killer7 or the upcoming No More Heroes III. So there is clearly a demand for this developer's projects among PC gamers.
