We cannot deny that Luffy is brave and loyal, he will do everything to defend his friends, however, is this enough to call him a hero? While it's true that he has done many noble things, he is still a pirate with a history of wrongdoing.

Chapter 1131 of One Piece prompted fans to discuss whether Luffy is actually a hero. It resulted from a post by user Geo_AW, who wrote: "Kinda lost respect for Luffy cause swinging on a guy in chains who can’t defend himself kinda low." This includes when Luffy attacked a chained Loki who called Shanks a "cowardly pirate," provoking the Straw Hat captain.

Many fans defended Luffy in the comments, explaining that he is a pirate and we should expect dirty tricks from him. Luffy isn't as noble as people think, with examples including instances of him hitting a woman or releasing truly evil prisoners. Therefore, they argued that attacking Loki, even when he's defenseless, is entirely in character for Luffy when provoked by the insult to his friend. However, some people also agreed with the author's post, acknowledging that Luffy didn't do his best this time.

I mean he released, killers, human traffickers, and more deplorable people so this is in brand for Luffy. It’s why I always find it funny when people truly try to put Luffy as this holy moral good figure – HeroDarkyDark.

He’s a pirate, that’s what they do - SAHtoshiDude.

You're surprised that the raised in the wild pirate who punches women, steals food and runs off with priceless heirloom swords doesn't fight fair? – ShaoDowMusic.

I need to say another thing. People that say Luffy is a pirate and that's why he did this are wrong too, I don't see Luffy as a selfish pirate at all. I will just say that I think he is more than a hero than a pirate, until the end of the series people will understand - shay2242.

Honestly same swinging on a chained man is crazy – Ashwolfenson.

Y'all need to stop making excuses for Luffy, that was just a wack move. I love him as much as you guys it’s ok to admit when he wrong - Geo_AW.
