Kevin Smith's Most Controversial Movie Will Be Re-Released After Going Out Of Print Years Ago. The Director Has Big Plans for Dogma
Dogma will return. Kevin Smith's movie will again be available through a re-release. On the occasion of this announcement, the director revealed that he has big plans for this title.
Kevin Smith has been on a journey through his past works lately, and he will soon have the opportunity to revisit one more of them. Until recently, Dogma was under the control of Harvey Weinstein, who bought the film back from Disney, however, that is no longer the case – Smith's production has been purchased by new owners who are interested in distributing the movie again.
Dogma is a film that touches on religious themes. It tells the story of two fallen angels who ended up in Wisconsin and are now looking for a way back to paradise. It turns out that their only way out may result in the annihilation of humanity, which does not stop them. Thwarting their plans, however, is an unusual group of people who don't want to let the disaster happen.
The controversy surrounding the movie stemmed from the fact that certain Christian groups condemned the film, calling it blasphemous. Protests were held outside movie theaters. However, the controversies did not harm the production, which not only earned $30 million on a budget of $10 million, but also received a positive reception from many viewers.
Dogma is not available for streaming or digital purchase. And after it was released on DVD in 2000 and 2001 and on Blu-ray in 2008, there was no decision to re-release it. Viewers interested in the production thus had to hunt for old discs, as the Weinstein-controlled movie was not available in any other form for years.
But that is about to change. Kevin Smith revealed that he and the new owner of the rights to Dogma plan to re-release the film in 2025, as well as do a theatrical tour to show and talk about his 1999 movie to audiences. He told the story during an appearance on the That Hashtag Show.
The movie has been bought away from the guy that had it for years and whatnot. The company that bought it, we met with them a couple months ago. They were like, “Would you be interested in re-releasing it and touring it like you do with your movies?” I said, “100 percent, are you kidding me? Touring a movie that I know people like, and it's sentimental and nostalgic? We'll clean up”. Right now, 2024 is our 25th anniversary this year. November is when we came out. So I think 2025 it looks like is when the movement is going to happen there. Back on home video, and then back out in theaters, and I'll tour it.
However, it's not all good news regarding Dogma. Smith raised hopes that a sequel to the production might be made precisely because new people own the rights to it.
Maybe, at this point, sequels, you know, TV versions, in terms of extending the story, something we could never do before. So, exciting man! And all those who worked in it are still viable. You know what I'm saying? Like f---ing Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, both still working. Salma Hayek, Chris Rock, still slapping, pun intended. So, you know, it's gonna be... it's possible.
For now, however, plans with a re-release of the film seem to be the most certain. As for the sequel – these are Smith's loose ideas for now, which we don't know whether he will ultimately want or succeed.
