It's like Deus Ex meets Metal Gear Solid. The new immersive sim DEEP STATE looks like a perfect blend for retro shooters fans

DEEP STATE is an indie game that feels like a lost 90s classic. If you’re a fan of Splinter Cell or Resident Evil, you’ll definitely want to check this out.

Remember when games focused more on experience, story, and immersion rather than just graphics? Those were the good old days. Sure, modern photorealistic games are great, but it’s always nice to see some retro-style goodness now and then. If you’re in the mood for a classic 90s FPS vibe, this upcoming title might be right up your alley.

A love letter to classic 90s shooter games

Even though the Resident Evil 2 remake was a huge hit, and every MGS fan (myself included) is eagerly waiting for MGS Delta Snake Eater, sometimes you just crave that low-poly nostalgia. That’s where DEEP STATE comes in. It’s a solo indie project that blends classic FPS action with immersive sim elements, drawing inspiration from GoldenEye, Deus Ex, and Resident Evil – just like it says on Steam.

The gameplay will give you plenty of freedom – take out enemies head-on, sneak past them, or hack your way to the objective. Plus, there’s a mystery to unravel behind a top-secret project. So if you’re a Splinter Cell fan who isn’t too excited about the remake, you’ll probably find a lot to love here too.

And if you’re not convinced yet, look at the Nosferatu inspired setting! Plus, there’s one familiar face that’s sure to get a nod of approval from Metal Gear Solid fans.

There’s also tons of DEEP STATE’s pre-alpha gameplay and demo reviews on YouTube. Whether Thick as Thieves from the Deus Ex and System Shock devs isn’t grabbing your interest, or you’ve moved on from mourning Eidos Montreal’s canceled Deus Ex 5, this might be the perfect chance to dive into an old-school atmosphere crafted by a solo developer. Be sure to follow FrogmanDev on X and check out DEEP STATE on Itch.io. Players have shared a lot of feedback on the demo there.

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
