Is X-Men '97 part of the MCU?
X-Men '97 has finally debuted on Disney+. Is Marvel's new TV series about mutants part of the MCU?
X-Men: The Animated Series from 1992 got a sequel after many years. The story from the TV series continues in X-Men '97, which debuted on Disney+ in March 2024. This TV show is produced by Marvel Studios and made available on the platform, where productions belonging to the Marvel Cinematic Universe land. So fans are wondering if X-Men '97 is canonical in the MCU.
Ever since Disney bought out Fox in 2019, Marvel fans have been waiting for the moment when the X-Men will join the universe, however, it has yet to happen. X-Men '97, like X-Men: The Animated Series, isn’t part of the MCU. So fans of the TV series shouldn’t expect that any characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will appear in the new TV series. If the situation were different, it would still be difficult, since X-Men '97 is set in the 1990s.
Such a move on Marvel's part was to be expected. The series, being a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, already has a history of its own, and an attempt to tie it to the MCU could only unnecessarily complicate and confuse everything. Besides, Marvel Studios is unlikely to merge live-action and animated productions at this point, treating them as separate creations.
X-Men '97, as already mentioned, you can watch on Disney+. Here you can find a release schedule of the series' episodes. And below you can watch the trailer.
