Into the Night - Netflix Announces New Sci-Fi Mini-series
Netflix has announced a six-part Belgian sci-fi series Into the Night, inspired by the work of Polish writer Jacek Dukaj, titled The Old Axolotl. The producers include the author and Tomasz Baginski.
The American series based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, produced by Netflix, is approaching fast, but the platform has one more adaptation of Polish prose up its sleeve. The company has also announced Into the Night - a six episode production from Belgium, inspired by The Old Axolotl by accomplished Polish sci-fi writer Jacek Dukaj. It will debut next year. Below you can see a short teaser.
Into The Night, our first original Belgian series arrives in 2020 and the pitch is simple: a group of people must stay on a plane to survive the sun that has become deadly.
The action of Into the Night will take place in a world where technological development has led to the blurring of the borders between man and machine. The starting point will be a cosmic catastrophe - the sun begins to destroy everything in its path. The protagonists of the production, passengers and crew of a night flight from Brussels, people from all social and national backgrounds, decide to escape the apocalypse, heading west all the time to stay in the darkness. This is how the dramatic struggle for survival begins.
All six episodes of Into the Night will be directed by the duo Inti Calfat and Dirk Verheye, responsible for the Over Waterseries . The showrunner is Jason George (Narcos, The Protector). Here is how he commented on the upcoming production (all the quotes below via Nflix.pl):
This thought-provoking thriller asks the question that we are hearing more and more nowadays: is humanity able to unite in the name of the common good, or will we fall prey to our own egoism and selfish nature? It seems interesting to me to present airplane passengers as a kind of community made up of complete strangers with different world views and backgrounds. Sometimes such random meetings lead to the creation of new friendships, and sometimes they end in a battle for armrests.
Among the executive producers of Into the Night we will find the author of the book, Jacek Dukaj himself, and Tomasz Baginski, who already has experience in working with Netflix on the aforementioned The Witcher. To quote the words of the director of The Cathedral (which, incidentally, was also inspired by the work of Dukaj):
The idea for the series was taken from Jacek Dukaj's excellent book The Old Axolotl, which touches upon the problem of transhumanism. What I like the most about it is the vision of the inevitable end of the world and the idea that the only chance for survival is to escape by plane with a group of completely strangers, who do not even speak the same language. It is rare for us to know anything about our fellow passengers, and in this case we find ourselves in a situation where we are becoming a new community on which our survival depends. I think it's a great idea for both a drama and a thriller.
The cast of Into the Night is not known yet. However, as the creators assure us, it will be highly international. We will see actors from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia and Turkey.
