Intel Core i9-10900F CPU Consumes as Much Power as RTX 2080
According to the latest rumors, the Comet Lake series CPUs will have an exceptionally big appetite for electricity. Under maximum load, the Core i9-10900F is expected to draw as much power as a GeForce RTX 2080 GPU, and the temperatures of the Intel processor could have been a bit lower as well.
IN A NUTSHELL:
- The Core i9-10900F can draw up to 224W under load;
- This is similar to the power used by a GeForce RTX 2080 GPU;
- The Comet Lake unit offers ten cores clocked at 4.58 GHz.
It looks like Intel's tenth generation processors - the so-called Comet Lake family - are going to require a lot of power. A Twitter user reports that the Core i9-10900F consumes up to 224 watts under maximum load. That's marginally less than the TDP... of a GeForce RTX 2080 (which is definitely not normal). By comparison, the competitive Ryzen 9 3950X requires up to 146 watts for the heaviest tasks, even though it has six more physical cores.
For such power consumption we get all ten cores to clock at 4.58 GHz. That's noticeably less than the Core i9-9900KS, which offers eight cores operating at 5GHz, with much less power consumption (which of course doesn't mean that the new generation won't be more efficient than the previous one).
In short, if you're planning on buying one of Comet Lake's top-of-the-line computing units, make sure you have a really powerful power supply. It wouldn't hurt to invest in a solid cooling system as well, because some of the temperatures shown in the picture above are not encouraging either (up to 93 degrees Celsius).
Of course, the above information is only a rumor, but it cannot be ruled out that it will turn out to be true. It must be remembered that we are dealing with another version of the architecture based on the outdated 14 nm lithography, which was first used in 2015 (!) for the production of fifth generation Core CPU (Haswell family).
