IGI Origins Director Says the Game Won't be Released Until Someone Regains IP Rights
Enad Global 7 has not yet formally canceled IGI Origins. However, if a studio capable of taking over the IP rights and completing it is not found, it may eventually be canceled - at least that's the opinion of the game's director, who was taken off the project.
The future of I.G.I. Origins is becoming increasingly uncertain. Rich Barham, director of the shooter, told eXputer that after the closure of AntiMatter Games, he tried to buy back the said brand together with the source code from Enad Global 7, which owns the rights, but his offer was rejected by the Swedish company.
- Recall that EG7 decided to to close down AntiMatter Games, which developed I.G.I. Origins, several months ago. Since then, the fate of the game has been uncertain.
- According to Barham, the "suspended" title is unlikely to be released at all. The only salvation for changing this situation is a new studio, which would be able (and willing) to buy back the rights to the game from Enad Global 7.
- For now, EG7 has not yet officially canceled the project, so perhaps it is still considering some ideas for its completion, which it does not want to share publicly.
Let's point out that I.G.I. Origins has been announced more than four years ago. During this time, the game was at a relatively advanced stage of work (as evidenced by the above gameplay), so it's not surprising that EG7 is hesitant to officially cancel it.
Hopefully, if the Swedish company has any plans for the project, it won't make fans wait long for information. Otherwise, it should sell off the rights to some studio full of enthusiasts like Rich Barham, who was willing to pay for the brand out of his own pocket.
It is worth mentioning at the end that I.G.I. Origins is expected to be a prequel to the story told in previous installments of the series - Project I.G.I. and I.G.I. 2: Covert Strike.
