Many players continue to debate whether Star Citizen is one of the most well-conceived methods for generating endless money, or truly an incredibly ambitious game that demands a very long time and substantial funding to develop. The fact is that over the years, a dedicated legion of fans has gathered around the title, who are eager to financially support Chris Roberts and his team, the result of which is almost a record-breaking year in 2024 in this respect.

Star Citizen continues to earn a fortune

Over the last 12 months, Star Citizen has raised over 116 million dollars from players, making the past year the second-best in the game's history. Only 2023 was better, when this constantly evolving space simulator received support at the level of 117 million dollars. So the difference is small and breaking the record was very close.

For comparison, the development of Black Myth: Wukong, released last year, reportedly cost 43 million dollars. It means that Star Citizen received almost 3 times more money in one year. Another example - The Witcher 3 cost CD Projekt RED about 81 million dollars.

Equally staggering is the total amount that Star Citizen has received from players since the start of the fundraiser. This currently amounts to over 774 million dollars and ("almost") nothing indicates that its growth will slow down anytime soon. Especially since less than 2 weeks ago, the devs released the 4.0 update in the Preview alpha version, which is one of the biggest patches in the history of the game.

Many fans are counting not so much on Star Citizen itself, but on Squadron 42, which initially was just a part of the main project, but over time became a standalone game. According to information provided by Chris Roberts, this title will see the light of day in 2026, after a "mere" 10-year delay.
