Honkai Star Rail - Why Does Luocha Carry a Coffin and Who Is in It
Luocha is one of the most mysterious characters in Honkai Star Rail. The version 1.3 update shed some light on his motivations, and why he carries his coffin.
Ever since Luocha has been revealed as an upcoming character before the release of Honkai Star Rail, players have speculated about the mysterious coffin he carries with him. After a long wait, the version 1.3 update provided a valuable hint. Below, we present a theory about why Luocha carries a coffin and who is inside.
Why does Luocha carry a Coffin in Honkai Star Rail?
Luocha’s motivations, as well as his true identity, are one of Honkai Star Rail’s most fascinating secrets. First of all, Luocha is merely a nickname he uses on the Xianzhou Luofu, as the residents cannot pronounce his real name. He introduces himself as a merchant, but as General Jing Yuan points out, Luocha isn’t in a hurry to conduct business, which is rather suspicious.
In the character teaser revealed on the HoYoLAB platform back in 2022, Luocha says:
This coffin isn't mine. I was merely entrusted to take the body back to the Luofu.
That seems to answer the question of why Luocha carries a coffin, at least on the surface. However, there is more to it, as we will see as his plan unveils.
In Luocha’s Companion Mission added in the 1.1 patch fans received a cryptic hint in form of a short recording.
In it, Luocha faces the Ambrosial Arbor, with his coffin to the side. He reassures an unseen companion that current events are not their concern, and that their journey has just begun. Luocha’s voice-overs and the description of his signature Light Cone also feature him talking to the coffin, saying they’re connected by a business relationship, and that he and whoever is inside are both using each other.
From this, we can conclude that:
- Luocha’s coffin is somehow related to his plans on the Xianzhou Luofu,
- these plans are connected to the Ambrosial Arbor,
- he is carrying the coffin because of a deal he made with whoever is hiding inside.
A breakthrough came in the version 1.3 update, in the cutscene at the end of the Obsequies Performed, A Long Road Ahead main story quest. In it, General Jing Yuan accuses Luocha of bringing the Stellaron onto Xianzhou and orchestrating the recent crisis to hide his true motives.
Luocha does not deny his accusations. His arrest is interrupted by the appearance of Jingliu, who reveals herself to be his accomplice. This brings us to the question, who was inside his coffin.
Who is in Luocha’s coffin in Honkai Star Rail
The cutscene in the 1.3 update Trailblaze Mission suggests the person hiding in Luocha’s coffin had been Jingliu. The man likely smuggled her onto the Xianzhou Luofu to execute their shared objectives, as Jingliu is a major criminal and would have trouble entering the nation legitimately. It’s supported by the earlier quote about bringing the coffin back to Xianzhou, as Jingliu is a native.
Another theory is that the coffin contained the Stellaron to be smuggled onto the ship. However, it’s unlikely as Luocha converses with it on many occasions.
Finally, the person in the coffin might be someone else entirely. During Luocha’s Ultimate attack, as well as in his Light Cone, we see rose thorns coming out of the coffin. These seem unrelated to the powers of Jingliu, who wields the Ice element. We might learn the answer when the plotline continues.
