Irritatting Bug Made Him Take 30,000 Unwanted Screenshots in Hogwarts Legacy
If you're playing Hogwarts Legacy on PC on an Xbox controller, you'd better check your Steam screenshots folder. It may already be filled to the brim with unwanted screenshots.
Sometimes games are plagued by critical bugs, often preventing gameplay - their impact on the game can be noticed almost immediately. Sometimes, however, the imperfections remain hidden for a long time, doing their work somewhere in the background. Such a story happened to one of the fans of Hogwarts Legacy. In a popular thread on Reddit a frustrated player complained about Steam, which, without any warning, takes screenshots in the game by Avalanche Software every time the gamepad buttons or analogs are used. The problem turned out to be really serious, because the user accumulated almost 30,000 unwanted screenshots, which together took up as much as 13 GB of space on his drive.
The thread made other users curious, including those who had a similar problem. Players quickly ruled out mistakenly rearranging a combination of keys responsible for taking a screenshot - it can be set for the game on the keyboard and mouse (the default is F12). There were suggestions to disable the Steam overlay or complete the game without using a controller.
In the end, the cause of the problem turned out to be a separate Steam system that activates when using the gamepad. It has about 20 permanently assigned keyboard shortcuts, including, for example, for volume control or taking screenshots. The poster encountered this problem only while playing Hogwarts Legacy, so apparently the game has a bug that causes the Steam key combinations on the gamepad to malfunction. The savior turned out to be downloading and configuring the controller thanks to a tool called Xbox Accessories - Microsoft's official app. It is worth noting that this is only a workaround for the bug - it will most likely be fixed in the future by the developers themselves.
Hogwarts Legacy was released on February 10, 2023 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. The title received very high ratings in reviews, and the excellent sales have exceeded expectations. The game will be released on PS4 and Xbox One on April 4, followed by Switch version in the summer, on July 25.
