Helldivers 2 dev cools excitement over crossovers. Star Wars and Halo fans won't be pleased
The creative director of Helldivers 2 spoke on the issue of crossovers and explained the Arrowhead studio's philosophy on the matter.
Just before Christmas, the first crossover in the history of Helldivers 2 was launched. As part of this, items inspired by the Killzone series were introduced into the game. It's clear that this won't be the end. On Reddit, one of the fans expressed the opinion that the devs must be careful not to let the game turn into something like Fortnite or Call of Duty, where various crossovers are constantly introduced, which don't always fit the character of these titles. To emphasize his point of view, this fan prepared a graphic showing potential events of this type in Helldivers 2, from sensible ones like Starship Troopers, to completely absurd ones, in which the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Snoop Dogg would appear. He asked at the same time, where the developers set the limit for this type of actions. We are writing about this because quite unexpectedly, the game's creative director, Johan Pilestedt, responded in the thread.
Pilestedt took a fan's graphic and drew where the creators of Helldivers 2 set the limit. This means that they allow crossovers with Starship Troopers or Warhammer 40,000, but similar events are excluded not only with brands of completely different atmospheres, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but also with universes like Halo, Doom, or Star Wars.
Then Johan Pilestedt clarified what Arrowhead studio's philosophy is when considering potential crossovers.
- The key is to avoid diluting the character of the Helldivers series. Brands chosen for collab must therefore be very similar to Helldivers. This is particularly important because every such crossover will become part of the narrative canon of the series.
- Such crossovers mustn't occur too often, especially since for some players, events of this type ruin the immersion.
- The developers also want to pay due respect to the brands they collaborate with during crossovers and maintain their unique character.
- Furthermore, after each crossover, a thorough analysis will be conducted on how it affected the Helldivers 2 brand.
