Head of Nvidia about the new Radeon 7: "Performance is lousy"
During yesterday's conference at CES 2019 AMD presented its latest layout, Radeon VII. The head of Nvidia, Jen-Hsen Huang, also spoke about the GPU and criticized the latest red camp proposal.
The presentation of the latest GPU from AMD – Radeon VII – was undoubtedly the biggest event of the company’s yesterday conference. According to the AMD representatives, the new GPU is supposed to allow for effective competition with the future top Nvidia GPU, GeForce RTX 2080. Nvidia’s response came quickly and is quite harsh.
The opinion about Radeon VII was presented by Nvidia's head Jen-Hsun Huang in an interview with PCWorld. As he said:
The performance is lousy and there’s nothing new,” Huang said. “[There’s] no ray tracing, no AI. It’s 7nm with HBM memory that barely keeps up with a 2080. And if we turn on DLSS we’ll crush it. And if we turn on ray tracing we’ll crush it.
Despite assurances of excellent performance on the part of the "red camp," it is hard not to get the impression that there’s some truth in the less than elegant review of Mr. Huang. The new Radeon will cost about as much as the GeForce RTX 2080 ($699), and AMD has a higher power consumption and doesn’t support the ray-tracing technology, which is not widely used so far, but will become more and more popular over time. Of course, the final evaluation of the new Radeon must be postponed until the first tests are published, but for the time being, it is not expected to be a breakthrough system.
