GTA veteran's cyberpunk thriller is set to offer a „fake open world.” Playing MindsEye is supposed to be like watching immersive series on Netflix
The new game from GTA series veteran Leslie Benzies is said to be as immersive as a good TV series. MindsEye is reportedly a „linear action game” set in a „fake open world”.

"An illegitimate child of Cyberpunk 2077 and Crime Boss," that is MindsEye, a new game from a former Rockstar Games dev. It looks like an interesting adventure set in a cyberpunk world. The devs promise not only dynamic, action-packed gameplay but also an engaging storyline, which the player is expected to experience like a session of their favorite series on Netflix.
Will MindsEye be a good show?
MindsEye is supported by the studio Build a Rocket Boy, established by Leslie Benzies, a veteran of the Grand Theft Auto series, who contributed to GTA 3, Vice City, the fourth, and the fifth installments.
In the game, we take on the role of Jacob Diaz, a former soldier, currently equipped with a neural implant named MindsEye. The story is set in the futuristic city of Redrock, where artificial intelligence, advanced technological experiments, and military misconduct shape reality. From the video materials presented so far, it can be seen that the title will not lack spectacular chases and shootouts straight from GTA.
Unlike Rockstar Games hits, MindsEye won't be a completely open-world game. As explained by assistant director Adam Whiting: "It's a linear action game," which will offer "kind of like a fake open world, or, one might say, a faux-pen world" (via Edge, no. 409 / Gamesradar.com).
While the title doesn't provide complete freedom, the devs have ensured its depth and authenticity. Redrock, the "main playable location," is supposed to be bustling with life, and its inhabitants—from baristas to couriers—are meant to make the game world seem alive and completely authentic. As the artistic director, Sebastian Livall underlines: "We really tried to build the depth of the world, and brands and corporations play a key role in this."
The creators reportedly attach great importance to narration. The gameplay was crafted so that the player engages as if in a series marathon: "We want you to feel driven to progress from mission to mission. We really care about making it resemble reading a book chapter by chapter, and the best modern example is binge-watching a favorite series on Netflix," Livall explained.
MindsEye will hit PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S later this year, but the exact release date hasn't yet been revealed.
