GTA 6 Most Expensive Game Ever? Latest Rumors Claim Insane Amount
Interesting rumors have surfaced online, suggesting the insane amount of money that the development of GTA 6 will consume.
Grand Theft Auto VI has not even been officially revealed yet, yet it is undoubtedly the most anticipated upcoming game. If new rumors are to be believed, it will also be the game with by far the highest budget in gamedev history.
- According to Dexerto development of GTA6 is expected to consume $1-2 billion, significantly outbidding such titans as Destiny (500 million), Star Citizen (also 500 million) or Cyberpunk 2077 (about 315 million).
- Last year, a budget of $2 billion was also mentioned by the hacker, who was responsible for leaking materials from GTA 6.
- A budget of $1-2 billion may seem crazy, but GTA 5 cost $250 million, and since 2013 the level of game development and thus their production costs have increased sharply. It is worth quoting the recent words of former head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, who, using the example of God of War, stated that over the past 12 years, game development costs have increased sixfold.
- Take-Two is certainly not going to spare money on the new GTA. Revenue from sales of Grand Theft Auto 5 surpassed $1 billion just three days after its release, and the game is still selling better than most new titles.
Can this growth rate be sustained?
Red Dead Redemption 2 was worked on by more than 1,600 people for eight years, and the game's budget is estimated at $540 million. Part of that is marketing costs, but we're still quickly heading to the point where the question of how long such a game development model can be sustained at all will have to be answered. Grand Theft Auto 6 will certainly break even, but it's doubtful that anyone other than Rockstar Games can afford to create such expensive games.
That's why many are pinning high hopes on procedural content creation and AI tools, which could significantly facilitate game development, allowing for more complex titles to be produced at a lower cost. Without this, it is hard to imagine that the current pace of development can be maintained.
