Gran Turismo Like Top Gun? That's What Stranger Things Star Thinks
David Harbour and director Neill Blomkamp wanted Gran Turismo to be a „realistic” show.
Gran Turismo is an upcoming film from Sony Pictures Entertainment, whose storyline is based on the video game of the same name. Inspired by true events, the story depicts the career of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage gamer. The boy, having won a contest, was given the opportunity to participate in a real car race. The character, played by Archie Madekwe, over time became a professional. The trailer promises a truly realistic show, which uses real sports cars and advanced movie technologies.
The latest issue of Total Film magazine will feature an interview with Neil Blomkamp. As reported by GamesRadar, the director admitted that special effects approach would not fit in a film of this category.
"What is appropriate [for this film] is Archie in a car doomed to discomfort, big Gs, nausea, going as much as 200 kilometers per hour."
In a further statement Blomkamp compared Gran Turismo to the spectacle that was Top Gun: Maverick. Recall that in preparation for the film with Tom Cruise, the actors underwent G-force training, and the flying scenes were shot for real, without the use of green screens. All this to make the production as realistic as possible.
"I don't know what kind of director Joseph Kosinski is but I'm sure he wanted to get the same effect. We had to make it realistic," he said.
Also David Harbour took the floor, the star known for his appearance in Stranger Things. The actor will play the role of Jack Salter, Jann Mardenborough's trainer, in the upcoming movie. The artist reacted enthusiastically to Blomkamp's words, admitting that their film is indeed similar to Maverick.
"Of course, I hope that the comparison to Top Gun: Maverick will be justified. [...] I think this film has a certain retro quality in the pace and in what it does, and we have the same thing. I feel that we are connected to this work and belong to the same family."
Premiere of Gran Turismo will take place on August 11.
