GOG Will Delete Cloud Saves. Gamers Should Review Them to Avoid Loss of Files

The GOG.com platform is finally going to impose a cloud data cap. After the summer, CD Projekt will delete excess files, including saves.

GOG is preparing to delete excessively large save files from the cloud. Platform users have until August 31 to put their "saves" stored on the store's servers in order.

Game files, which size exceeds the default allocation limit (200 MB per game), will be removed from the GOG database. The main focus will be on items that have no connection to the game but have been placed in the Cloud Save folder, and then the platform will begin removing old, unused saves.

GOG gives the reason

GOG explains its decision by pointing to the growing number of games in the store's catalog, which leads to an increased need for cloud data storage and, consequently, higher service maintenance costs. The limitation is meant to ensure that all players will have access to sufficient and manageable space for their progress in the game.

Users will receive notifications about their save files exceeding the default limit until they adjust their cloud saves to the 200 MB per title restriction. People wishing to keep all data must download it to their own storage devices.

To check the current status of your save files, you need to go to the GOG account management page or the management tab in the GOG Galaxy application client.

On Steam, the limits are set by the devs

Interestingly, the limit isn't nothing new; up to now, GOG hasn't enforced it in any way. In fact, similar restrictions exist on Steam, but on Valve's platform they are set by developers (via SteamWorks).

However, GOG users were unpleasantly surprised by the sudden decision to enforce these restrictions. Some of them point out, ironically, that the most space is taken up by the files of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 - titles released by CD Projekt Group, the owner of the platform. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to decrease the size of this data because a significant portion of it is made up of automatic save files.
