GeForce RTX 3070 Ti May Launch After All as Nvidia Arms for War
Nvidia may be preparing to release another high-performance GPU, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. The end of the year promises to be an exciting battle against AMD.
Recently we mentioned that Nvidia reportedly canceled the release of GeForce RTX 3080 20 GB and GeForce RTX 3070 16 GB GPUs. Earlier, it also canceled the release of GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, but the company may be preparing to resurrect it. Moreover, this return from beyond the grave may not be a simple resurrection, because, as the latest unofficial reports suggest, based on the well-known insider kopite7kimi (whose information has proven its worth in the past), the new-old chipset is expected to be more powerful than the original version.
According to kopite7kimi, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti (working name), it is expected to aim between the GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB and GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB. The card, which would be based on the GA102-150 core, would have 7424 CUDA cores, i.e. 1536 more than the RTX 3070 and 1280 less than the RTX 3080. The chip would have, like the latter, 10 GB of GDDR6X memory on a 320-bit data bus. The specification is closer to the more powerful GeForce RTX 3080, so the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti should not be significantly weaker in games.
According to earlier rumors, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti was to be based on a full GA104 chip with 6144 CUDA cores and offer 16GB of GDDR6 memory (older and slower) and a slowe 256-bit bus. It therefore differed little from the specs of a regular GeForce RTX 3070 except for doubled VRAM.
This could mean that Nvidia was afraid of AMD, which has revealed its cards on the performance of one of the top RX 6000 series Radeons (it's not known if it was the strongest chipset in the offer - it will be clear ont October 28th when it is officially announced), at the recent AMD Ryzen 5000 reveal. They may be closer to the RTX 3080 than the RTX 3070 not only in terms of power consumption. This would explain a possible change in Nvidia's plans and the expansion of the offer with another very efficient model, which - unlike the first, "killed off" version of the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti - will be able to compete with RX 6900 and RX 6800.
It is not known when the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti could be available on sale - probably not before December this year, given the huge availability problems with current Ampere-based models. Its suggested price could start from 599 dollars. AMD is said to fight for customers with an aggressive pricing policy, so the latest rumors from the Nvidia camp make a lot of sense.
Meanwhile, we expect the launch of the officially confirmed GeForce RTX 3070 with 8 GB VRAM, which is to have performance comparable to GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. The card will appear on sale on October 29, this year, and two days earlier we will know the results of independent benchmarks. According to the rumors, in mid-November the even weaker GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is to be released, also with 8 GB of GDDR6 memory.
