First Reviews: Demon's Souls - The Perfect Remake

Demon's Souls enjoys really great reviews from critics. Sony can be pleased with this launch title, and soulslike players can rub their hands in glee for a great opening of the new generation.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • Since November 12, more reviews of Demon's Souls, one of the launch titles for PlayStation 5, have been posted on the web;
  • So far, everyone has praised the game, calling it an almost perfect remake.

Bluepoint Games decided to continue working with Sony Interactive Entertainment, and after the warmly received Shadow of the Colossus remake on PS4, it was time for a refreshed version of Demon's Souls, the iconic action RPG from Japanese studio From Software, which spawned the soulslike genre. The original version could still be played on PS3, and its remake launched on November 12, 2020 as a launch title for PS5. Is this a game worthy of opening a new generation? The critics agree that yes - we are dealing with a hit of 2020. The average score on Metacritic is 92/100 so far, although it should be remembered that it was determined based on 7 reviews. The rest of the critics are still completing the game.

Selected review scores of Demon's Souls

  1. TheGamer - 100/100
  2. Game Informer - 93/100
  3. GameSpot - 90/100
  4. Millennium - 90/100
  5. 4Players.de - 90/100
  6. Screen Rant - 90/100
  7. Eurogamer Italy - 90/100

The biggest success of Bluepoint Games is, according to reviewers, finding the golden mean. On the one hand, it is the small audiovisual revolution - not only the general visuals are impressive, but also the devs' attachment to the smallest details. On the other hand, the spirit of the original has been preserved, and the core of the gameplay has not changed decisively - it has simply been adapted to modern standards.

The critics assure us that the work will appeal to both the old soulslike fans and gamers who just want to start their adventure with From Software's works and titles based on them.

The shortened time of waiting for return to the game after death is very noticeable, as dying, as you can probably guess, happens very often here. The loading screens last up to a few seconds, which is a really good result, taking into account the toil we had to experience while playing the original.
