Final Fantasy Approches Important Milestone
Square Enix has released its annual report. With it, we learned that the Final Fantasy series is approaching 200 million copies sold.
Final Fantasy debuted in 1987 as Square's last chance at the time. Developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the title turned out to be a real hit - enabling the company to stay afloat. Since then, 15 major installments have already appeared, and the 16th is in the pipeline. Initially, the series existed primarily in the hearts of Japanese gamers, but since the release of FFVII in 1997, it has gained recognition among audiences around the world.
Thanks to an annual report published by Square Enix, we learned that the Japanese corporation's flagship series has reached sales of 173 million units. We are talking here about physical and digital copies. When it comes to sales of the classic Final Fantasy VII, it can boast 13.9 million copies.
In addition, we learned the sales results of the company's other important brands. In the case of Kingdom Hearts we are talking about more than 36 million copies sold - this is a series that has been around since 2001. Popular primarily in Japan, Dragon Quest has recorded more than 85 million copies sold. It's a series whose roots date back to 1986.
The report from which the data comes concerns the previous fiscal year, which ended on March 31. The future of the series in question is painted in colorful hues. The following years will see the appearance of Final Fantasy XVI and Kingdom Hearts 4. Alongside this, the universe of the sevents installment is also being developed, which will receive the second part of the remake, as well as the spin-off titled Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. Dragon Quest is also not sleeping, as a twelfth installment and new versions of classic games are being prepared. And this is still a small part of Square Enix's plans.
