Another Confirmation: Fate of System Shock 3 Depends on Tencent
Nightdive Studios has confirmed that the rights to System Shock 3 are completely in the hands of Tencent, and it is only up to the Chinese giant to decide whether the game will be developed at all.
We learned a little more about the situation of System Shock 3, the third installment of the classic series.
- Nightdive Studios has confirmed that the full rights to the third part of the series have been sold to the Chinese company Tencent.
- Thus it is up to Tencent alone whether the third part of the series will be developed at all.
- In the current situation, the rights to the brand are divided between two entities. Nightdive Studios owns those allowing it to develop remakes of the first two installments of the series, while Tencent owns the rights to a possible System Shock 3 and subsequent installments.
Recall that the third part of the series was announced in 2015. OtherSide Entertainment worked on the game, and the project was headed by Warren Spector himself. Originally, the publisher was to be Starbreeze. However, the game encountered many problems. After several years most of the developers were fired, and the rights were sold to Tencent.
This March Warren Spector admitted that both he and his studio had not been working on the game for more than three years. Therefore, if Tencent decides to make the game, it is likely that a new team will develop it from scratch, rather than trying to finish what Otherside Entertainment left behind.
So it does not look like we will get a continuation of the series anytime soon. As a consolation, there remains the remake of the first installment of the series, the work on which is expected to be nearing completion.
