- River, the prototype of Dogmeat from Fallout 4, has died;
- One of the game's creators paid tribute to the game by mentioning the dog's friendly nature;
- He also revealed what influence River had on the final look of the game.
The day has come when we unfortunately have to say goodbye to another member of the gaming community. This time, however, it's not its human representative, but an animal. We're talking about River, who served as a model for Dogmeant in Fallout 4. Joel Burgess, one of Bethesda's employees, who took part in the creation of the game, paid the dog a tribute.
Burgess also mentioned the influence River had on the design of the dog companion. During walks, she would often run ahead to check the road, then look back and wait patiently for her owners. In an effort to make them happy, she would also bring them "gifts" such as large logs. Both of these behaviors were recreated to the game.
However, the choice of River for the role of Dogmeat was influenced mainly by her character. The creator confessed that during the search for a suitable German Shepherd a lot of menacing-looking animals were found. River, meanwhile, was cheerful and friendly, which turned out to be a decisive factor in choosing the dog. Eventually, she lent her appearance, movements and voice to the creators.
Years later, we can say that the decision to choose River was correct. Dogmeat became one of the most popular companions in Fallout 4. Despite the lack of associated personal quests or dialogues, he won the sympathy of players around the world. This is evidenced by the popularity of the Everyone's best friend mod, which enables us to traverse the post-apocalyptic wastelands in the company of both traditional companions and Dogmeat. Since its release, the mod has been downloaded over one and a half million times.
