The demo for Fallout: Vault 13, a project aiming to recreate the content of the first game in the series using the Fallout 4 engine, debuted as announced tonight. You can download the demo version from NexusMods and ModDB, or the official project Discord.

  1. The demo takes up 5.2 GB.
  2. To play, you will need not only the base version of Fallout 4, but also all add-ons.
  3. You also need to have FO4 in version 1.10.163, which is the last one before the next-gen patch. This official patch has broken the compatibility of many mods. To install this version, you may use Fallout 4 Downgrader or Simple Fallout 4 Downgrader. Avoid using the included downgrader for Fallout: London, as it isn't compatible with Fallout Vault 13.
  4. Additionally, it's necessary to install the Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE).

You need to install the demo using the selected mod manager. If you have Vortex (the official program of the NexusMods service), all you need to do is use the "Download: Vortex" option on the project card on the right side of the screen. Alternatively, you can download the mod files and install them using the Mod Organizer 2 program.

Differences between the demo and the full version

The demo allows you to check a large part of the modification. The creators ensured that it accurately represents what the full version will offer, while also cautioning about several significant differences and deficiencies.

  1. The full release of the mod will include dialogues with voice actors.
  2. The demo contains a bug that makes the character disappear from the screen in the character creation menu after changing the body shape. First, complete the configuration of other appearance elements before addressing the body shape at the very end. In the full version of the mod this bug will be fixed.
  3. The demo version has a simplified skill system. The creators discovered a bug at the last minute that caused the skill level not to change automatically when modifying SPECIAL statistics. The devs know how to fix it, but it will take some time and they didn't want to delay the demo because of this.
  4. The demo includes one playable area, while the full version of the mod will provide a total of five.

Generally, the demo is impressive. The creators have a lot of work ahead of them, but their current achievements are already impressive. The demo version offers hours of entertainment, and the creators have effectively captured the original atmosphere.
