Fall Guys is the Biggest Digital PC Debut Since Overwatch
SuperData analytics group summarized the global digital distribution in August. The industry has had a very successful month, but the biggest winner was the debuting Fall Guys, which outclassed all competition on PC.
Horizon: Zero Dawn may have done well in the premiere month, but it's not Guerrilla Games' title that is the biggest winner of August. If we believe the SuperData analyst report, it was Fall Guys by Mediatonic that dominated the video game market, earning $185 million in digital distribution since its launch. This is more than any other game released on PC since Overwatch launched in May 2016. Blizzard's title generated a total of $269 million in revenue at the time. Let's add that by the end of August Fall Guys had reached 8.2 million PC buyers, and by early September the game was available on PlayStation 4 at no extra charge to PS Plus subscribers.
The success of Fall Guys is all the more impressive because the game was developed by a small, independent team. Yes, the publisher took care of the advertising campaign (also in a specially designed game), but probably nobody expected such an explosion of popularity, including the developers (at least judging by the initial problems with servers).
The report also mentions the success of other games. In August, Fortnite achieved 76% more revenue on PCs and consoles than in July. This more than compensated for 62% of loss on the mobile market due to Epic Games' strife with Apple and Google. Pokemon GO's developers are not complaining either, because despite the players being forced to stay at home, Mobile Pokemon has had its best month ever. Niantic quickly adapted the game to the world facing the coronavirus pandemic, the effects of which were visible in previous months. High revenues translated into outstanding market performance, which this year has already generated 82.3 billion dollars (13% increase compared to January-August 2019).
