Factorio Sold Over 2.5 Million Copies; Devs Announce DLC
The devs of Factorio have revealed that they have sold over 2.5 million copies of their game. Furthermore, they announced that there will be a major expansion instead of a sequel in the future.
Czech studio Wube Software, the devs of the indie economic strategy game Factorio, added another post on their blog. The topic was the future of the title, which recently received the final patch 1.1 fixing all reported bugs. It was confirmed that this was the last stable build of the game. However, minor fixes will continue to appear.
The devs answered all questions about a possible Factorio 2. They admitted that they are happy with the current shape of the game, and making another Factorio would be the opposite of what they want to continue doing. Developing a sequel that just expands the content using copied mechanics from the original is not enough for Wube Software. On the other hand, the devs don't feel like throwing everything in the trash in favor of making a completely new game after what they've done recently.
Czechs are also not in favor of releasing small DLC packs, because it causes confusion among the players. Moreover, from the devs' point of view, they are inconvenient to develop. Instead of several smaller add-ons, the studio plans to release one big expansion. It also noted that despite the big changes that the future expansion will bring, all mods and multiplayer mode will still work properly. The release date of the DLC is kept secret for now, but according to the Czechs, work on it should not take more than a year.
At the end, the devs shared a handful of statistics. The first version of Factorio appeared on March 31, 2012. Since then, 8 years and 10 months have passed, during which the game sold over 2.5 million copies. The developers thanked everyone who contributed to the development of the game and also announced that yesterday's post was the last to appear in the near future. Wube Software employees will now focus again on working on the game and at the same time do not want to distract the players from the finished title.
